چکیده

The Bose condensate model is used to analyse the superfluid flow around an ion (modelled as a solid sphere) and to elucidate the mechanism of vortex ring emission from the sphere that occurs if its velocity exceeds a critical value. An asymptotic expansion is developed for the steady subcritical flow, using the ratio of the healing length to the radius of the sphere as a small parameter. This expansion allows for the compressibility of the condensate, and converges well enough for the critical ion velocity to be calculated accurately. The flow for supercritical ion velocities is computed numerically. Particular attention is paid to the question of why the vortex rings are emitted at a preferred location on the sphere’s surface.

Two-Fluid Hydrodynamics in Trapped Bose Gases and in Superfluid Helium

A review is given of recent theoretical work on the superfluid dynamics of trapped Bose gases at finite temperatures, where there is a significant fraction of non-condensate atoms. One can now reach large enough densities and collision cross-sections needed to probe the collective modes in the collisiondominated hydrodynamic region where the gas exhibits characteristic superfluid behavior invol...

Pulsating and persistent vector solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a lattice upon phase separation instability.

We study numerically the outcome of the phase separation instability of a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. When only one excitation mode is unstable a bound pair of bright and dark solitonlike structures periodically appears and disappears, whereas for more than one unstable mode a persistent soliton-antisoliton pair develops. The oscillating soliton represents a reg...

Study of Parameters Affecting Separation Bubble Size in High Speed Flows using k-ω Turbulence Model

Shock waves generated at different parts of vehicle interact with the boundary layer over the surface at high Mach flows. The adverse pressure gradient across strong shock wave causes the flow to separate and peak loads are generated at separation and reattachment points. The size of separation bubble in the shock boundary layer interaction flows depends on various parameters. Reynolds-averaged...

Direct, Nondestructive Observation of a Bose Condensate

The spatial observation of a Bose condensate is reported. Dispersive light scattering was used to observe the separation between the condensed and normal components of the Bose gas inside a magnetic trap. This technique is nondestructive, and about a hundred images of the same condensate can be taken. The width of the angular distribution of scattered light increased suddenly at the phase trans...
